Getting Started

Over Terms Two and Three, 20 issues of The College Herald will be published each Tuesday. In each issue, approximately20 pieces of students work will be published. In all, 400 students will feature, so you have an excellent chance of getting published, getting your message out there and winning one of the prizes.

We’re looking for all kinds of work, written and visual, from secondary students.

  1. Written work can be in the form of modified essays or essay excerpts, feature writing, creative pieces, articles, reviews, poems, letters, interviews or investigative journalism.
  2. Graphic and visual work includes artwork, photography, cartoons and illustrations.

So you want to contribute – what’s next?

  1. Prepare. Read the Herald for ideas, use the guidelines on this website.
  2. Select a topic from the Weekly or General Themes, or think about something that’s important to you.
  3. Decide what sort of work you want to submit. You could write a feature, interview someone, take a photo, create a cartoon...it’s up to you.
  4. Create your entry. Or if you are submitting work you completed previously and have modified for The College Herald, go to the next step.
  5. To enter on-line complete the submission form, making sure to include all your details and the name & email address of your teacher (who will need to approve the entry).
  6. If you are entering by mail, get your teacher to check and sign your work (download an entry form here) attach the signed entry form to your work and send your work to: Freepost 209433, The College Herald - NSM Department, Response Bag 500015, Auckland Mail Centre, Auckland 1142 or fax (09) 373 6529.
